Are you fast tracking on the “Never ending desire for a more youthful appearance”? See how you fare when answering the following questions:

Have you begun using muscle paralyzing injections before the age of 40?

Have you had plastic surgery somewhere on your body?

Do you constantly berate yourself regarding your appearance?

If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are battling with Mother Nature.

Trying to look younger using chemicals, surgery, and injecting foreign substances that have no long-term testing is detrimental to your good health. The medical profession that deals in enhancement cannot possibly predict how their patients are going to react to these substances or procedures over a twenty or thirty year span.

Once you’ve decided that surgery or injections is your chosen modality to look younger, you have set yourself up for failure. Why? Because one injection is never enough – twenty injections over 2-3 years won’t be enough either and before you know it, ten years will have passed and your body is filled with toxic chemicals that may cause harm. And you still need more injections!

Same goes for surgery. Will one eye lift be enough? Will you constantly want to update your look using surgical techniques that contribute to an old looking face? Wait a minute you say! Isn’t surgery supposed to make one look younger? Yes, that’s the goal but more often than not, multiple surgeries make your face look like you’ve had multiple surgeries. The pulling and tweaking can produce a very freakish appearance, especially when fine lines and wrinkles are zapped by a laser.

The adage: “Aging Gracefully” has been replaced with carefully staged propaganda disguised as advertising in upscale magazines, TV and radio proclaiming that you need Botox, Restylane, and even surgery to look youthful.

This is a lie told by big companies who manufacture chemical and cadaver substances; the drug companies and the medical community have tons of money to sway your consciousness into believing this hype. They want you to become hooked on injections and surgery so they can continue to develop more and more substances for you to use. So what if there are deadly complications from over use?

“Over use” is big business and that is exactly what is hoped for no matter if too many injections equals repeat business. These repeat procedures equate to easy dollars for the medical community. And, there is little risk to them when they’re using injections to line their pockets; no large insurance premiums are required for non-surgical procedures. That’s one reason why Medi-Spas are prevalent in and adjacent to shopping malls and structures in high-traffic, high-dollar areas; there are no national standards in place to protect the consumer and they offer everything from facials to pharmaceutical injections and other medical procedures. The lure of the “lunch-time facial” with easy in and out can affect not only your appearance but your over-all health and wellbeing.

At some point, someone has to take a stand and say “Enough!” Taking control of your health means you must be willing to stop having frivolous surgery and multiple injections that paralyze and artificially plump up sagging facial features.

Taking back your power doesn’t mean you have to look old or dowdy. In fact, if you stop squandering money on needless procedures Mother Nature never intended you to use, you can actually treat the cause of aging in the face.

Most aging is caused by loose and flabby facial muscles; if you’re sporting a double chin, a wattle or hooded eyes, this is a result of muscles that are no longer strong and tight. If the apples in your cheeks sag even when you smile and your forehead droops into your upper eyes, do not be discouraged because you can actually exercise all the muscles in your face and neck. When you do this, your muscles will experience increased circulation, plumping the skin so that the face looks younger and fresher.

Using exercise techniques that are proven to lift and tone your face makes sense; there is no risk, it’s very affordable and instead of looking freakish, you just look like you did 10-15 years ago…wholesome and recognizable.

It is estimated that by 2030 approximately 68 million Americans will be over the age of 65 and many of these will suffer from low vision or blindness.

These figures are frightening but not as frightening as seeing a loved one having to face the associated problems caused by vision impairment or blindness.

Vision impairment reduces the overall quality of life when compared to those with ‘normal’ vision. Independence can be lost, feelings of isolation and frustration are increased which can often lead to depression. The risk of injury from tripping or falling will grow and basic recreational activities like reading, driving, using the internet or watching TV can be lost.

Unfortunately, vision deterioration or loss is accepted as yet another inevitable side affect of the aging process. Surely this sad inevitability can be addressed? Alas there is little choice once the horse has bolted. Attitudes will surely need to change because often medical assistance is reactive rather than proactive. Disease prevention is not part of a physician’s job nor was it part of their training even though we all know that prevention is better than cure. The prevention against age related diseases is in the hands of the individual not in the hands of the medical establishment.

The loss or severe deterioration of vision has catastrophic effects on the individual’s independence and quality of life. The magnitude of this problem cannot be understated.

After the diagnosis of an eye disease, traditional approaches will lead to costly medical or surgical treatments over a considerable amount of time. Success of a treatment will be defined by gains of lines of vision on a high contrast visual acuity chart in controlled clinic-office settings. Success is not measured on the restoration of independence or the quality of life for the aged individual. For elderly, visually impaired Americans, post diagnosis usually means many trips to the physician for frequent intraocular injections along with the ongoing daily administration of medications and the use of a vision aid. In fact, the patient becomes dependent on physicians, social workers, families and friends to help them. Slowly but surely, elderly patients with vision impairment progressively lose independence.

For the non-scientific community, access to information about vision research is usually difficult as this information tends to remain within highly defined disciplinary boundaries. Full text peer-reviewed scientific publications on vision research findings largely remain amongst scientists and clinicians because of restricted access. Funding to stimulate research for maintaining or restoring the independence of older Americans with vision impairment, will be limited unless scientific information is freely accessible to policy makers, businesses and the interested public.

A change needs to happen but it may be a long time coming. The scientific community is slow to act on change and extremely cautious to try breakthrough ideas. If a patient is losing their sight, the medical professional will do everything that their current knowledge allows them to do. They will try to cure the medical problem but that’s as far as it goes. The patient has to accept the situation and live with the costly consequences. It is the patient who needs support to live with the disability on a day to day basis and it is not the doctor’s place to give that support post appointment. Living with this disability can have a devastating effect on the person’s independence, dignity and pride and puts a strain on resources both financially and from the network of helpers around the patient. Aged individuals with any disability need a lot of care and attention and many are not fortunate enough to have relatives or friends in close proximity to provide adequate care.

Perhaps we should take prevention against age related diseases more seriously and maybe all of this heartache can be avoided.

For a brighter, independent future with the quality of life you and/or your loved ones deserve why not start using Can-C eye drops today and every day thereafter?

Preventing potentially disastrous aging eye diseases could cost you as little as 57 cents a day for both eyes. Each box of Can-C contains 2 vials and each vial contains approximately 70 drops, that’s 5 weeks at 1 drop in both eyes daily.

Nothing threatens your vision in more ways than age. Changes to your vision creep up as you age and suddenly these changes in eyesight rob you of your independence, when valued the most. Yet, according to the National Eye Institute (NEI), careful monitoring of your eye health and regular eye exams from an eye doctor in your area can help have good vision well into old age.

A scientific doctor with the National Institutes of Health says that America will spend between $20 and $22 million dollars on eye problems and that one American becomes blind or has severe vision loss every 11 minutes. Being aware of common age-related eye problems and knowing the warning signs of eye health concerns associated with age can curb the debilitating effects of eye problems.

Cataracts

Some say that cataracts are so common in aging eyes that this condition is a normal part of aging. Approximately half of all aging adults, aged 65 or older have eyes with cataract formation. Move up another decade and these numbers increase significantly. Knowing what causes cataracts and addressing your cataracts early can considerably improve your vision, especially with new options that offer implantable lenses that offer vision correction at ranges of vision. Common Symptoms of Cataracts include:

Clouded or blurred vision
Night vision difficulty
Need for brighter light to see
Fading or yellowing of colors
Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

Glaucoma

After the age of 40, your risk of developing glaucoma escalates with each passing decade. Estimates show that by 2020, Americans with glaucoma will increase by 50 percent to 3.6 million, so knowing the is important. Common symptoms of Glaucoma include:

Blurred vision
Severe eye pain
Headache
Haloes around lights

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Among American seniors, macular degeneration, also known as <a href="http://www.eyes.com/age-related-macular-degeneration.html"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >age-related macular degeneration and AMD, is the leading cause of blindness. Affecting more than 1.75 million people in the U.S., this number is expected to rise to almost three million, given our aging population.

Common Macular Degeneration Symptoms:

Blurry vision
Straight lines become crooked or wavy
Dark, empty area appearing in center vision
Drusen – yellow deposits under the retina

Diabetic Retinopathy

The NEI puts the number of Americans over the age of 40 with diabetes at around 10.2 million. Experts predict that 30% of people with diabetes have not yet been diagnosed. In the first group of Americans over the age of 40 with diabetes, the NEI estimates that 40 percent of those have <a href="http://www.eyes.com/diabetes-and-diabetic-retinopathy.html"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >diabetic retinopathy.

Common Diabetic Retinopathy symptoms:

Blurred or distorted vision
Floaters in your vision
Eye pain
Partial or total loss of vision

If you have tried facial plastic surgery, injections that plump and paralyze and liposuction for those hard to exercise places, you may be less thrilled with your results now than even six months ago.

There is news from a growing band of plastic surgeons, cosmetic doctors and dermatologists saying that cutting healthy tissue may indeed accelerate aging. This sentiment is not limited to just the US, this is an international concern being voiced almost daily.

Aging continues no matter what modality you choose. Let’s say you opt for a surgical face lift; even though your facial muscles and skin have been cut and sutured, that tissue will continue its degeneration while adjacent tissue is also weakened from cutting and suturing.

This means you will notice sagging again and this sagging promotes tension in the surrounding tissue. Now you will be a candidate for the very popular “Revision” surgery that promises to fix the sagging, or does it?

Our faces “age” when the supporting facial muscles lose their shape and contour due to “disuse”. This means that little if any movement you make with your mouth or face will keep those muscles taut and in good form. Over time the atrophy becomes noticeable as muscles and muscle groups pool into one another creating the look of lines, wrinkles and a sagging face.

Cutting perfectly healthy tissue as a “remedy” for facial aging means that the elasticity of the skin surrounding the incisions will be compromised and those muscles that were shortened and sutured will no longer have the needed volume that is present in a youthful face.

Cutting and suturing your beautiful face robs your skin of life-giving nutrients and oxygenated blood; instead of wearing the radiant soft look of youth, you realize that that you cannot fool Mother Nature. Cutting healthy tissue never improves the skin.

Facelifts have evolved with newer techniques; years ago, faces were simply cut, repositioned and sutured. Now the process requires that each area – skin, fat, muscle and fascia – be separated, individually repositioned and sewn while avoiding facial nerves that weave throughout the tissue.

Add muscle elongation to the mix of cuts and sutures, risks and dangers, and this is a recipe for the look of old and done and over done.

Disappointment and unrealistic expectations are genuine concerns of most physicians. Oh sure, they’re trained on cadavers but surgery is not a definite art. There are human conditions and errors; sometimes there are health challenges and surprises that were not anticipated.

Dr. Michael Prager, a member of the Bristish Association of Cosmetic Doctors, is convinced from his clinical experience that anti-aging cosmetic surgery actually accelerates the aging process. He says, “Four out of five clients I see regret their decision to have anti-aging surgical procedures.”

Surgery for any reason is risky and fraught with danger and should only be used as a last resort, especially on an aging face. Remember there are limitations to every surgery, the results are short-lived and the risks are considerable There are no guarantees that you will like the work or live to complain about the results.

Injections pose their own risk because injecting and injecting and injecting again may not produce the desired results long-term as the aging process will continue to affect the muscles in every portion of your face and neck. One pertinent question to ask is how many injections are you willing to have over the next 20 years and how much money are you willing to spend?

Another aspect of injections is the documented fact that these serums and potions can travel to the brain. That’s right. When the face is injected with Botox, the risk goes beyond redness at the injection site; in fact, if you choose Botox, there is a long laundry list of health conditions and warnings you must sign off on to protect the injecting doctor and the drug company before anything is paralyzed.

Just remember that plastic surgeons aren’t just pushing plastic surgery, now they have added injections and skin care treatments to their menu of services.

Fillers like Restylane, Collagen, Perlane and Sculptra have become popular to prop up sagging facial skin. Does everyone have a positive experience using these expensive, temporary fixes that dissolve into your system after a few months? Of course not. Are patients regretful? Sure, they are.

Alex Kuczynski, a reporter for the New York Times for eight years and now a columnist there wrote the fascinating book Beauty Junkies. In it she writes that she is not obsessed, okay maybe ‘relatively’ obsessed, but looking good at first meant ‘maintaining’. Then she became addicted and tells how she had her first Botox shot at 28, spent over $8,000 in one year on microdermabrasion, collagen injections, more Botox and Restylane, an eye lift and other anti-aging modatlies. She decided when her top lip resembled a large yam after an unexpected Restylane reaction and much soul searching that that these methods did not ultimately add to her happiness and satisfaction and even labeled her liposuction foolhardy and wasteful. “No matter how much money you spend, or how much plastic surgery you have, or how many dermatologist visits you schedule, inevitably, times’ winged chariot will catch up to you and march all over your face.’

We have read that Jamie Lee Curtis, Susan Sarandon, Julianne Moore, Jane Fonda and many more celebrities will not ever have more of anything plastic and instead have decided to age spectacularly. Here are these beautiful women plus others – who can easily afford the best of everything and they say no to procedures that could potentially wreck their health and their beautiful faces.

Will injections and surgery lose their status symbols as people realize that this type of self improvement is really self mutilation?

We want to look good for our age.

We want to feel confident and happy with our looks and we absolutely can without resorting to any life threatening, painful, expensive, temporary fixes.

The best choice to improve an aging face is facial exercise.

You want your face to look young and healthy, but how often do you exercise it? Just like body muscles that tighten with exercise, facial muscles that are stretched out, lax and droopy will respond to simple resistance training, too.

It is remarkable that by strengthening those tiny, hidden muscles with targeted exercise that this can act as Nature’s facelift. You will feel the muscles respond immediately and this lifting, tightening and toning plumps up the muscles making the skin and face look younger.

It is wise to heed the docs who have seen first hand the effects of facial surgery, liposuction, facial injections, skin care regimens, lasers and products. Many believe that surgical cosmetic procedures can have a detrimental effect that shows up as thinning, discolored skin, hair loss and skin that just looks and acts older.

Facial exercise is the most positive step to recreate that younger face you thought you had lost forever.

The eyes are a focal point on your face…they twinkle, they “light up your face,” they “have it!” As we age, the skin surrounding our eyes changes (sagging skin, loss of skin elasticity, drooping eyebrows and cheek fat pads, weakness of supporting eyelid structures and puffiness under the eyes), which can make you appear less lively

Dr. Azizzadeh, whose plastic and reconstructive surgery practice is in Beverly Hills, offers many different surgical and non-surgical options to improve the appearance of the eyes and create a more youthful face.

<a href="http://www.facialplastics.info/blepharoplasty.html"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" title="Beverly Hills Blepharoplasty">Beverly Hills Blepharoplasty (eyelift) surgery – the removal of significant skin, fat and muscle, which can result in hollowness of the eyes and unnatural “cat-like” corners of the eyes
Correction/revision blepharoplasty surgery – cosmetic or functional surgery for those unhappy with the outcome of eyelift surgery
Asian blepharoplasty – surgically creating a crease in the eyelid to create the double eyelid fold that is a sought-after feature in Asian cultures
Mini eyelid lift – usually restricted to correcting issues with either upper or lower eyelids, not the entire eye
Restylane, Juvederm, Botox or fat transfer volume restoration – injectables to improve the hollowness of the lower eyes and the laxity of the upper eyelids
Temple rejuvenation – a collagen stimulator, Sculptra, fills in the hollowness in the temple region and gently lifts the brow

In some patients Dr. Azizzadeh also performs Beverly Hills forehead lift (or brow lift) or <a href="http://www.facialplastics.info/facelift.html"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >Beverly Hills facelift, particularly the mid-face or endoscopic procedures to get the desired outcome. Dr. Azizzadeh can analyze your unique facial structure in order to decide the best surgical or non-surgical options.

The world of cosmetic non-surgical procedures is full of myths and rumours. So let’s take look behind the false façade of scaremongering and nonsense to the truth behind the myths about non-surgical cosmetic procedures:

Myth 1: Botox / Azzalure Injections are Dangerous

TRUTH: People are understandably concerned about the fact that Botox comes from the Botulism Toxin. However these types of wrinkle-relaxing injections have an unparalleled safety record in the UK. Botox has been used for medical procedures for many, many years and it’s now one of the most widely performed non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the world. It’s not only used for the relaxation of wrinkles but also to treat hyperhydrosis, or excessive sweating conditions. Always ensure that you get your Botox / Azzalure injections from a qualified doctor for the best treatment.

Myth 2: You Don’t Need To Get Botox or Azzalure Treatment from a Doctor, it’s a lot cheaper at a beauty salon.

TRUTH: If the treatment is cheaper at a hair salon, you need to ask the question ‘Why?’ Botox is sold by the supplier for the same price up and down the country. If you get a Botox treatment at a significantly cheaper price, it’s either been diluted or it’s even possible that it’s not even really Botox!

If an untrained person without proper training carries out your Botox treatment, then that’s when Botox becomes a potentially dangerous problem. Poorly trained people use Botox on areas of the body that it was not designed to help, causing frozen facial expressions. Professionally trained cosmetic specialists use Botox responsibly and know the potential risks and how to avoid them.

Myth 3: Topical Botox has replaced Botox Injections

TRUTH: Topical Botox is not yet approved for usage in cosmetic treatments. It is still being tested in clinical trials in the UK and the USA. It does look like it may be very effective on areas around the eyes and help to relax and reduce crow’s feet. It may also boost the effects of traditional injectable Botox. It’s unlikely that it will replace Botox entirely as it just does not have the same precision as the original cosmetic Botox.

Myth 4: There aren’t any real anti-aging creams that keep you looking younger.

TRUTH: That’s completely untrue. There is a product called Retin-A Isotretinoin which is a prescription strength cream. Over the counter versions do have some effect but not as good as prescription strength from your doctor. It works by encouraging your skin cells to replenish themselves much faster. Over sustained periods of time, it can greatly improve <a href="http://www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk/acne-scars.aspx"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >acne, acne scarring, smooth out your skin and remove wrinkles.

Myth 5: Non-Surgical Fat Removal Isn’t As Good as Traditional Liposuction.

Truth: The rapid advances in non-invasive, non-surgical alternatives to traditional surgical liposuction are astonishingly successful. They use high frequency ultrasound to break up fatty tissue and avoid a lot of the pain and bruising associated with traditional liposuction. Traditional liposuction is still effective but alternatives such as <a href="http://www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk/vaser.aspx"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >VASER Lipo are much better at precisely targeting smaller areas without damaging the surrounding tissue.

The third decade of my life has been very interesting with all of the bodily changes that are taking place. I never used to even think about my teeth or my eyes, but these days invincibility is starting to slip away. My eyes have always just worked for me and I took for granted the 20/20 vision I was born with; but now things are starting to get a little fuzzy if they are too small or too far away. I know it’s only a matter of time before I have to get an exam, and eventually join the less than perfect portion of population. Vision correction has advanced a long way in the last 100 years, and today we have many choices to fix the problem. It’s a matter of opinion which is the best but I’ve been told that the solution depends on the person.

Glasses are the oldest form of vision correction, but they don’t really correct vision; they just alter the light that reaches the eye. People do judge you, at least a little, based on what you look like, and glasses alter how other people see you. Good or bad depends on how you want to be seen, and you can change your glasses to be seen a little differently. Glasses are easy to put on and take off, and they don’t need to be sterilized; they are also inexpensive and don’t need to be thrown away like contacts do. On the down side, glasses make your field of vision smaller and they can fog up in colder weather.

Contacts are a newer technology that basically put glasses directly on your eyes. The principle is the same; alter the light that reaches the eye so the picture is in focus. Unlike glasses though, contact don’t alter your natural appearance to other people. Some people look very good in glasses, and other people just can’t find a set that look right on them. Contacts need to be sterilized frequently and putting them in and taking them out is more of a hassle than glasses. They won’t fog up or shrink your field of vision, but they are more expensive because they need to be thrown away and replaced. I don’t know how I would react to contacts because I have never been comfortable with things in my eyes, but I suppose everyone says that until they try them.

LASIK eye surgery is the newest form of vision correction and it actually permanently corrects eyesight rather than just temporarily altering it. It’s able to fix most common vision problems, but it is surgery and carries a small level of risk. Corrective eye surgery is also expensive compared to glasses, but some insurance plans and discount plans like Ameriplan can help lower the cost. Eyesight continues to degrade as we age, so an option like surgery is best used after your eyesight has gotten bad enough to no longer be ignored. If you have it done early in your life, you will most likely need to have it done again later on. There is also a period of down time for your eyes while they get used to the changes and heal from the surgery.

Most people in my situation will eventually use all three of these options. In my late thirties I will start with a basic pair of glasses for reading and driving at night. Ten years from now, I will need to use them all of the time so I will switch to contacts. Then in my fifties it will be time to get <a href="http://www.allaboutvision.com/visionsurgery/other.htm"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >corrective surgery which will hopefully keep my eyesight in good shape until my seventies. If you are more adventurous than I, then your schedule for healthy eyesight may be different; but all of us will feel the effects of time on our eyes. Count your blessings if your eyesight is still perfect; who knows what the future will bring for your eyesight and vision technology.

I have been working with healthcare and <a href="http://www.greatdentalandhealth.com/vision.php"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >Ameriplan vision for several years. Most people find these subjects boring, but the U.S. spends $.10 of every dollar on these 2 things.

Vision changes

With aging, the quality of vision worsens due to reasons independent of aging eye diseases. The area of the pupil governs the amount of light that can reach the retina. The extent to which the pupil dilates also decreases with age. Because of the smaller pupil size, older eyes receive much less light at the retina. In comparison to younger people, it is as though older persons were wearing medium-density sunglasses in bright light and extremely dark glasses in dim light.

To maximize the light entering the eye, make sure that your eye glasses have anti-reflective coating. Anti-reflective lens coatings significantly reduce surface reflectance and allow greater light transmission through the lens. When AR coating is applied to both the front and back surfaces of a lens, the percentage of transmitted light increases to approximately 99% (compared to 90-92% with non-ARC lenses).

Aging causes a dramatic slowing in dark adaptation. Color vision changes cause some reduction of ability to discriminate blues and blue-greens. The yellowing of the lens is believed to be responsible for this effect. The aging lens and cornea causes glare by light scattering, especially for shorter wavelengths. Aberrations of cornea also increase with age, leading to poor vision especially when the pupil dilates as in the dark.

The most aggravating aspect of vision in an older person seems to be the feeling that it does not work as effortlessly or as quickly as it did in younger days. They must concentrate harder and require higher levels of illumination than they formerly did in order to have the same perceptual results.

Lighting the way

Everyone’s vision deteriorates with age, but there are ways to lessen its impact. Good lighting can make the difference between seeing and not seeing for older adults, especially in your homes, stairways, kitchen, living rooms etc. Naked bulbs: These are worst for older eyes, producing a glare that can be disorienting and painful. Task lighting: Light should be focused on the work, not toward the eyes. A good choice is a CFL with electronic ballast that starts up without flickering. Bathroom lighting: Lots of light should be provided overhead and even in the shower, where accidents are particularly common.

Anatomic changes

Aging causes laxity and downward shift of eyelid tissues and atrophy of the orbital fat. These changes contribute to the etiology of several eyelid disorders such as ectropion, entropion, dermatochalasis, and ptosis. The higher eyelid skin crease and ptosis may be due to age related disinsertion of the levator muscle aponeurosis, and to involutional atrophy of the orbital fat. The horizontal eyelid fissure shortens by about 10% with aging. With aging a prominent white ring develops in the periphery of the cornea- called arcus senilis. The corneal endothelial cells gradually decrease in number. The vitreous gel undergoes liquefaction and its opacities – visible as floaters gradually increase in number.

Aging Eye Diseases

Cataract: Cataract (‘safed motia’) is a clouding or opacity of the normally transparent lens inside the eye. It prevents the light rays passing onto the retina. The picture that the retina receives becomes dull and fuzzy. The normal process of aging causes the lens to harden and become cloudy (opaque). This is called age-related cataract and it is the most common type. It can occur anytime after the age of 45 years.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma (kala-motia, kala-paani) is a serious condition that involves an elevation in pressure inside the eye caused by a build-up of excess fluid. Left untreated, this pressure can impair vision by causing irreversible damage to the optic nerve and, eventually, blindness.

Macular Degeneration (ARMD): The macula is the part of the retina, which provides us with central vision and allows us to see fine detail, such as recognizing a face, reading, or watching television. Macular Degeneration is a condition in which the macula gets damaged. It is often related to aging, and is commonly referred to as Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Presbyopia: If you have presbyopia, you have the loss of the ability to focus up close that occurs as you age. Most people are between 40 and 50 years when they realize for the first time that they can’t read objects close to them.

Macular Hole: A macular hole is a small break in the macula, located in the center of the eye’s light-sensitive tissue called the retina. A macular hole can cause blurred and distorted central vision. Macular holes are related to aging and usually occur in people over age 60. It is 4 times more common in females.

Diabetic Eye Disease: Retinopathy is usually due to damage to vessels in retina. Retinopathy is usually caused by Diabetes (DM), but is sometimes caused by other diseases such as high BP.

Dry Eye: The most common cause of dry eye is a failure of the glands in your eyelids to produce tears, which often occurs as part of the ageing process.

The real problem of blindness is not the loss of eyesight. The real problem is the misunderstanding and lack of information that exist. If a blind person has proper training and opportunity, blindness can be reduced to a physical nuisance.

While you’re young, the ability to have perfect vision is as simple as wearing contacts or glasses, or getting LASIK or PRK so you don’t have to worry about lenses. However, as we age, one of the common conditions is presbyopia. Usually beginning with those in their 40s or 50s, presbyopia is when the eye is unable to focus at different distances. The first sign of this is the inability to read fine print.

With the advent of new technologies to cure near- and farsightedness, as well as surgery for cataracts and glaucoma, there is also relief for presbyopia that does not require a laser like LASIK does. And this relief can be found in <a href="http://www.lasikdocs.com/refractive-lens-exchange.html"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >refractive lens exchange (RLE). RLE helps to achieve better eyesight through removing and replacing the lens of the eye with an artificial lens. This is performed in much the same way as cataract surgery.

Procedure

After giving you topical eye drops to numb your eyes before the procedure begins, an incision is made at the edge of the cornea. Using an ultrasonic probe to break up and remove the natural lens, an intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted. There are several choices of IOL including Crystalens, ReZoom, and ReSTOR. Each have advantages you should discuss with your ophthalmologist. However, one of them is that any future need for cataract surgery is eliminated. The IOL can be multi-focal for those who have problems with both near- and farsightedness, or for those with one or the other. This procedure usually takes only about 20 minutes, and vision improvement is immediate.

Complications are rare, but may include:

•	Infection

•	Hemorrhage

•	Increased risk of retinal detachment

•	Distortion of vision

•	Loss of visual clarity

•	Dislocation of the implant

•	Floaters

•	Glaucoma

•	Corneal dryness

•	Induced astigmatism

In the weeks following your RLE surgery, you will be instructed to use special eye drops to help with the healing process. Your return to your normal activities will be determined by how well your eyes are healing.
