Beatons Wood first opened for a single weekend for parents and friends of Park Mead Primary School in 1972.  The school wanted an outside swimming pool, and opening the woods was part of the fundraising exercise to help achieve this.  The response to the swathes of Bluebells from those first visitors was so great that opening the woods had to become an annual event.

Over the years the walk has been extended to add extra interest and now, 38 years later takes in Park Wood and Primrose Farms, also supplying a Farm Trail element.
