Many people have heard the term LASIK but do not know what it stands for. The proper interpretation is Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis The procedure reshapes the cornea which is permanent by using a laser to do the surgery. The procedure is carried out by an ophthalmologist, with the aid of sophisticated computer-controlled equipment.

How the Surgery Works. Before you decide that LASIK surgery is right for you, make sure that you know all the facts, and how they might affect you. Before committing to the surgery patients should look into what lasik is and what it can do for vision. Lasik eye surgery has been big news on the vision front. If you are contemplating LASIK eye surgery, you are not alone. This surgery can help to eliminate your need for glasses or contact lenses.

If you’re like many you were just born with blurred vision, and have had to deal with the hassles of glasses or contacts for a time that is too long to remember. Although nearsightedness can be easily fixed with glasses or contact lenses (when not too severe), many people don’t like to hassle with either one. LASIK laser eye surgery helps with the shaping of the cornea; once the cornea is re-shaped it will help in the reliance of wearing contacts or glasses.

Many people get the corrective surgery because they just don’t want to wear glasses or contacts anymore, many people have been wearing them their whole lives. As an instance of Snellen measurement, people with 20/40 vision can see clearly at 20 feet what people with 20/20 vision can see clearly at 40 feet.

It is gravely necessary to choose the best surgeon available. Experience is what counts the most, so choose a surgeon with plentiful experience. If so, then you need to be sure that you know how to pick the right surgeon for you and what to expect during your surgery. You can easily negotiate with your surgeon about spreading the costs over a specific period.

Before you can get the surgery you will need to go for a surgical consultation, they will measure your eyes take pictures to make sure you are suited for the surgery, if everything checks out ok the doctor will let you know if you are a candidate for surgery.

LASIK is performed by placing a ring over the cornea, this will be an applied using high pressure to lift the cornea off the eye, and this may feel slightly painful. These tests are designed to let the surgeon know how much work the cornea needs to have done. LASIK eye surgery involves cutting a flap of the corneal tissue with a hinge being left at one end of the flap. Since the risk is great after surgery the patient must go home and wear the eye patches and not touch the eyes, if the flap of the eye moves before healing the can give way to infection or not seeing clearly.

Before going for LASIK, have your surgeon explain to you what these risks are. There are both benefits and risks to this surgery, and you should be aware of all of them before you decide to have the treatment. You should also know the risks as well as the costs of the procedures. When getting surgery there is always risks and benefits, make sure you read up on the procedures and do research so you understand what is about to happen and how it will affect your eyesight.

The cost depends on several factors and varies from one provider to another. The cost of LASIK continues to come down in price.

Just like it is said that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, it is also true that beauty lies in the eyes. Our eyes are the mirror of our soul and no matter what a person may be speaking; it is their eyes that tell the truth. It is no wonder therefore, that we try all possible means to look after our eyes and treat them with utmost care. Beautification of the eyes is a woman’s prerogative and she leaves no stone unturned to make them look attractive. A lighthearted quote goes “boys don’t make passes at girls with glasses” and although this is not true, some people do tend to take it to heart. Undoubtedly, the best option would be to have a perfect vision and lasik surgery provides this option to people who need vision correction.

A good sight is a blessing as the very thought of wearing spectacles can be uncomfortable for many of us. Although contact lenses have taken care of this problem to quite an extent, still they come with their own set of disadvantages. A lasik surgery can allow you to see the world much more clearly once again. The surgery can be used to successfully rectify any vision defect like farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and other eye conditions. The high success rate of a lasik surgery makes it a popular method of vision rectification procedures preferred by eye surgeons. A person needs to be eighteen years or above in order to be eligible for this surgery.

The lasik surgery consists of two different procedures, one which involves creating the corneas flap while the other involves, molding the cornea under the flap. The vision of the patient is corrected during the surgery by reshaping the cornea. The advantage of the surgery also lies in the fact that it hardly takes about 15-20 minutes and the recovery time is also very fast compared to any other kind of surgical procedure. However, this kind of a surgery can be an expensive affair and one needs to be financially prepared for this kind of expense. A proper financial planning of the costs is thoroughly recommended before opting for this kind of surgery. Advancements in the world of medicine have made another option available to the individuals’ keen of this procedure. One could look into the possibility of getting this surgery done in another country where the surgery might cost much less than in one’s home country.

It is best to review all possible options and then take a course of action, which will be the most beneficial for the patient. It is also helpful to carry out a little background research about the possible outcomes and effects of lasik surgery. Although considered a very safe process, it would be best to be well informed. Also, you should entrust your eyes only to a reputed surgeon with a successful track record. Ensure that you follow all advice of your doctor before and after the surgery, in order to guarantee a positive outcome.

A person who wants to have Lasik surgery for vision correction has some issues to consider. Finding the right doctor is important, but there are other concerns, too, and anyone who is interested in Lasik must be sure to have their questions addressed before they embark on an elective surgical procedure. While there are few dangers and complications with Lasik, no surgery is risk-free, and no one should have surgery without being sure they understand both the benefits and the possible risks. This can help to make a decision regarding a procedure much easier for the patient.

Before Lasik

First, of course, a person has to choose an eye doctor and a Lasik surgeon that he or she feels comfortable with and have standard examinations to make sure that the health of the eye is acceptable for Lasik. In addition, the thickness of the cornea is often measured, as a thicker cornea is better for the Lasik procedure. Other measurements are made for the prescription and amount of correction needed.

If the person desiring Lasik has been wearing contact lenses, he or she must stop wearing them for a specified period of time. This is usually determined by what kind of contact lenses are worn and how long the person has been wearing them. For example, a person wearing extended wear gas permeable hard lenses all the time will have to be out of them longer than a person wearing soft lenses on a daily basis and removing them at night. This will allow the cornea to return to its natural shape, which helps to ensure the Lasik correction will be right the first time and should not have to be ‘touched up’ in the future.

During Lasik

The person having Lasik will be given anesthetic eye drops, and occasionally a mild sedative, before the procedure begins. The Lasik surgeon will gently restrain the patient’s head and secure the eye so that there is no chance of movement, as this could chance the vision correction. After that, a blade or a laser, depending on the type of Lasik chosen, will be used to cut a flap in the cornea, which will then be folded back. The laser will reshape the interior of the cornea, and the flap will be put back in place, where it will begin to heal almost immediately. The Lasik procedure only takes about 15 minutes.

After Lasik

Vision correction is almost immediate, and vision stabilizes very quickly, so a person does not have to wait weeks to know the extent of his or her results. It will be necessary to have follow-up appointments and to follow all of the after-care instructions very carefully, in addition to alerting the eye doctor if there are any problems such as sudden vision changes or excessive pain. Some discomfort is to be expected, and resting one’s eyes for a few hours after the procedure is recommended.

The famous Denver LASIK procedure in vision correction or eye surgery actually stands for Laser-assisted insitu Keratomileusis. It is a surgical procedure used to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

There is no doubt that it can seem a bit scary having your eyes operated on. Trusting a doctor to perform surgery to your eyes, especially if you can make do with wearing eyeglasses, is nothing anyone takes lightly. The people I know who are not afraid of undergoing surgery are individuals who are going blind and have no other alternative but to undergo eye surgery.

Denver LASIK as it is known today is very popular because it is in Denver where the excimer laser technology was first announced in May of 1973. There was a meeting held in Denver, Colorado for the organization called Denver Optical Society of America and this is where LASIK was born.

The very benefit of this procedure is that you do not have to wear eye glasses anymore. It means convenience because you will no longer be dealing with eye glasses that can break and get old. Contact lenses on the other hand, are very expensive and tedious to use. It is also unsafe to sleep with them on. Plus, there are so many things you have to do to maintain your contact lenses: apply oil or drops to your eyes, clean them with a special solution, etc.

With the Denver LASIK vision procedure, you are guaranteed to have clearer and normal eyesight for many years into the future. Plus, this laser procedure is very safe and very affordable.

About 3 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with glaucoma. Glaucoma is a visual condition that causes damage to the optic nerve due to increased internal ocular pressure (IOP). Generally, patients with glaucoma feel no symptoms until they begin to notice vision changes.

A clear watery liquid called the aqueous humor baths the lens and cornea of our eyes. This liquid flows in and out of the area behind the cornea and in front of the iris, (called the anterior chamber) nourishing the structures inside the eye. When a patient has glaucoma, this fluid does not drain quickly enough out of the anterior chamber. Soon, fluid builds up, and the internal ocular pressure inside the eye increases. Left untreated, this increased pressure causes damage to the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness.

Glaucoma is diagnosed with a thorough eye examination that measures eye pressure and includes a visual examination of the optic nerve and a visual field test. This complete examination measures whether loss of vision has begun.

Glaucoma is treated with medicated eye drops, conventional surgery and/or laser surgery.

Risk factors for glaucoma include:

•	family history of glaucoma

•	Negro ancestry

•	high blood pressure

•	diabetes

•	smoking

•	advanced age

•	corticosteroid use

•	previous ocular trauma

For an individuals considering LASIK surgery to correct any of a number of common vision problems, glaucoma poses some unique problems. Individuals with very high IOP or individuals at risk for glaucoma may not be good candidates for conventional or custom wavefront LASIK, All-Laser LASIK, or Epi-Lasik. However, other types of refractive surgery like PRK, LASEK, NearVision CK, P-IOL, or RLE may be more appropriate.

Some types of LASIK surgery involve the use of a microkeratome, a mechanical or laser surgical device used to create a flap of corneal tissue. Attached temporarily to the eye with a vacuum ring that creates suction, the microkeratome briefly but greatly increases the internal ocular pressure of the eye, negatively affecting the patient who has elevated IOP.

The Sacramento LASIK physicians of Griffin and Reed Eye Care insist on using the German engineered Hansatome Microkeratome instrument to create the corneal flap for the LASIK treatment. As a leading provider of LASIK procedures, Griffin and Reed Eye Care puts the needs of Sacramento LASIK patients at the forefront in selecting the very best, most technologically advanced equipment and procedures for every Sacramento LASIK treatment.

It’s important to note that, while glaucoma does not automatically mean refractive surgery is not possible, the individual’s glaucoma should be treated and the condition must be stable before refractive surgery can be undertaken.

PRK, LASEK, CK, P-IOL, and RLE are types of LASIK surgery that do not require a microkeratome and have not been shown to dramatically increase IOP. Discuss these options with your eye surgeon to determine if any one of these procedures is right for you.

If you are ready to choose an eye care professional to be evaluated for any type of refractive surgery procedure, it is highly recommend that you consider a physician who has been evaluated and certified by the <a href="http://www.usaeyes.org/"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >USAEyes nonprofit organization. USAEyes provides objective Lasik information and lists Lasik doctors who meet specific patient outcome requirements and are certified by the nonprofit, nongovernmental, Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance.

The <a href="http://www.fda.org/"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >Federal Drug Administration offers an approved online glaucoma test you can take from the comfort and convenience of your own computer to help you determine if you have or are at risk for glaucoma. <a href="http://www.keepyoursight.com/index.php?referral=aDiM"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" >Visit the FDA’s online test, which may be helpful, but should not be used in place of a visit to your ophthalmologist at least once every other year.

Lasik surgery has been around since 1987, and is a great way to end your use of glasses, contact lenses or not being able to see without them. Laser eye surgery can reduce or completely remove the need for any corrective lenses. You will have to go through a screening process for all patients, and of course, an eye exam. It’s important before beginning on any laser eye surgery journey. You thoroughly research your doctor, cost, and recovery time.

Not only will you screen, the doctor for the appropriate documentation, schooling and machinery, but also you will be screened your self by the doctor. The doctor will do a thorough examination including a complete health examination to ensure that the surgery procedure cannot only will be a success, but that your body and health will stand up to the surgical procedure itself.

Be sure to be really honest about any health situations you may have and be sure that you thoroughly understand what exactly your doctor’s talking about. There are several different procedures concerning using a laser to repair the vision in your eye. An excimer laser technique is often used for correction eye surgery. This type of technique has been in effect since 1987, one of the first of its kind and actually profiles your cornea and eye in order to get the best possible chance of success.

Laser eye surgery is good for both farsightedness and nearsightedness and according to your degree of difficulty is according to the success of improved vision. There’s very little pain and recovery times are usually short. You’ll be amazed at how improved your vision is from the minute the surgery procedure is done

Doctors cannot promise perfect vision after laser eye surgery, but it is estimated that 90% of laser surgery patients have improved vision. Although some patients experience a full recovery of 20/20 vision, others may still need some form of corrective lenses.

Several different instruments will be used when having laser eye surgery, and a microkreatome is one of the different instruments that is used for laser eye surgery. The excimer usually gives a more precise laser cut but according to the difficulty of repairing your vision different machines may be used. Cool ultraviolet light rays are used to cut the initial flap over the cornea and also remove damaged tissue. The amount of tissue removal is according to the severity of the eye and vision problems. Thorough conversation with your doctor will allow you to understand exactly what’s going to be done and the results, and how it will improve your vision.

Once your doctor has removed any damaged tissue within your cornea, he will then reshape the cornea so that you will be able to see better. This is one of the major benefits of Lasik surgery, and either machine will do the job and it’s all up to your doctor as to what your particular eye needs, and the tools at hand.

The cost of Lasik eye surgery is difficult to estimate in general terms because of the difference in prices charged by varying providers. It’s also dependant on each respective patients various needs with requirements differing from person to person.

The introduction of new technologies and procedures have resulted in a steady rise in the average cost of a lasik operation. Prices have risen between 30-40% in the last five years and by the end of 2006, the average cost of lasik per eye was about $2000.

Be Wary Of Advertised Specials

A trap for new players is falling for advertised lasik specials which can be rather misleading. Being drawn to a procedure being advertised for between $500-1000 is one thing and obviously very tempting however, keep in mind many people won’t qualify for the advertised price. If they do, then it’s quite likely extra work is required which will include several follow up visits and extra cost.

It’s important to read the fine print and ask the right questions before committing to lasik eye surgery. The average cost of lasik usually revolves around the cost per eye and if a procedure is being advertised for under a thousand dollars it’s more than likely for one eye.

Qusestions You Need To Ask Before Committing To Lasik Eye Surgery

Several factors contribute to the cost of Lasik a operation. These include such things as overheads including surgical equipment, surgery location and consultation fees. If you are considering Lasik then consider asking the following questions when you meet with your surgeon.

- Always ask for a clear explanation of what is included in the cost of lasik surgery. Factors such as initial evaluation and examination may seem straight forward procedures at the beginning but in many cases, you will be charged for these which is understandable but, find out exactly how much you’re paying.

- In many instances, other doctors will be asked to review your situation but most people don’t take into account their time is included in the fee.

- As much as you need to know what’s included, you also need clear guidelines as to what is not included. This will save any arguments when it comes to paying the bill!

- Ask your doctor the risks involved. Be clear on this. While lasik eye surgery is reasonably safe, any complications which do arise will need to be treated and therefore can “blow out” the original quote.

- Be clear with your doctor on the amount of follow up required. Will you need medication and if so, how expensive is it?

Several factors contribute to the average cost of Lasik surgery. The procedure is one thing but think of it a little like an assembly line. By the time the finished product reaches the showroom, a variety of input has gone into the end product all contributing to the success of the project and all contributing to the cost. It’s your hip pocket so be sure to go in “with eyes wide Open.”

Many people are familiar with the term “laser eye surgery” and know it to be a type of corrective surgery to help improve various vision impairments. Lasik has become a very popular solution for many people, since it became widely available about a decade ago, in the mid 1990s.

Unlike older forms of eye surgery, Lasik does not necessitate cutting the eye with a surgical scalpel. Instead, lasers are used to do the job. Recently, custom wavefront Lasik surgery was introduced as an advancement to the basic Lasik method.

The phrase “custom wavefront” is actually not as new as might be thought. The term “waterfront” has actually been around for almost a century and was commonly used in astronomy, as a concept of using mirrors and various lenses to manipulate rays of light.

However, the term was applied to the Lasik form of laser eye surgery about a decade ago, in the late 1990s. These same principles began to be applied to the corrective procedures to enhance the outcome of Lasik surgeries.

What really makes the custom wavefront Lasik method different from the standard lasik eye surgery is that it provides the Lasik eye doctor with a considerable amount of additional, detailed information to help him better pinpoint the exact problems in the eye that need to be corrected. This is done by a mapping process that uses the way the light passes through the eye to reveal a three-dimensional image of the interior of the eye.

The Lasik custom wavefront procedure essentially “unravels” the way that the light passes through the eye of the patient. Because of this, during the examination of the eye, the doctor is able to see all the way to the retina at the back of the eye, giving him a view of the functioning, or malfunctioning patient’s optical system. It is this detail that allows the Lasik eye doctor to identify the minute imperfections and damaged areas of the eye that traditional types of eye examinations often missed completely.

The result of this greatly improved ability to see the inner working of a person’s optical system is that the laser eye surgeon can then use this information to perform a much more effective custom wavefront eye surgery. Patients enjoy a greater degree of improvement in their eyesight, when compared to the results of the older Lasik procedure.

The custom wavefront Lasik surgery is still considered relatively new, and it is a more expensive procedure than the standard Lasik vision corrective surgery. However, for many people who are suffering from poor vision problems, the cost of Lasik surgery of any kind is quite small compared to the benefits of improved eye sight that they enjoy with very little risk or complications.

As one of the most common outpatient vision correction procedures, Lasik surgery is a relatively straightforward process with the treatment itself taking only minutes. Los Angeles eye surgeons and surgeons in the world perform Lasik surgery on approximately one million eyes every year and it is no different than any other surgery

Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis (Lasik) is intended to eliminate or reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contacts. Beverly Hills Lasik surgery has become more and more popular as the decades progress but still Laser Eye Surgery is not for everyone. Alternative surgery procedures like PRK and Lasik are excellent alternatives to glasses and contact lenses for patients suffering from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism as well as a wide range of other vision conditions.

A procedure like this can permanently reshape the cornea, which is the clear covering of the front of the eye with the help of a laser. Most patients do not report any problems after the Los Angeles Lasik laser surgery. There are a wide variety of different optical lasers used in this procedure but common for all of them is that the laser will remove some tissue from the cornea.

Patients who have reached or are close to reaching the age of 40 should consider that their vision may be affected by conditions that cannot be treated with Lasik surgery, such as presbyopia. Patients with certain medical conditions or taking certain medications should not choose Lasik surgery because of the implication that it might give, according to top professional Beverly Hills Lasik surgeons. If you’re pregnant or nursing you will fall out of the ideal candidate classification and as it is advised to wait before considering laser vision correction. Patients with a condition called keratoconus are ineligible for the procedure and so are patients who have high levels of refractive error. Both parties are at a slightly higher risk for post-surgical astigmatism.

Laser vision correction surgery is an extraordinary procedure that has helped thousands of people see better and is an exciting opportunity for anyone who suffers from vision problems. Lasik surgery is the preferred vision correction surgery these days, despite its high cost. This type of surgery is however generally not the best option for older patients suffering from age-related conditions. Often these conditions can’t be treated with the Lasik procedure. To learn more about Lasik and laser eye surgery, contact you local Lasik eye specialists to learn more.

Lasik eye surgery is the term used for a particular surgical procedure on the cornea or outer layer of the eye, called laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. The main purpose of this lasik procedure is to improve refractive errors in the eye. This means persons who have problems with their vision that need to have corrective lenses such as spectacles or contact lenses will, after the procedure, be able to dispense with these aids.

The lasik procedure is usually done under local anesthetic by an experienced eye surgeon or ophthalmologist, the entire procedure taking not more than 20 minutes.

What are the benefits of lasik?

The most important immediate benefit is the almost immediate improvement of the eyesight,
although the maximum or optimal benefit of this procedure may take up to six months. Gone is the need for spectacles or contact lenses. Gone is the fear of misplacing one’s glasses or
lenses, and the fear of breaking or ruining them accidentally, a fear only understood by the
unfortunate person who has to have them on before he can see anything clearly. After this
procedure, there is no need to remember to bring spare pairs of glasses or contact lenses if
one goes on a holiday, or to remember to bring along the necessary lens containers and
solutions for soaking or cleaning the lenses.

A whole new world of clear vision without glasses is open to the person who has undergone
lasik.

Career paths will broaden to include occupations which at one time tended to favour the non-wearing of glasses, such as modelling, law enforcement, and aviation (both as a pilot as well as cabin crew).

Physical activities which were once off limits for bespectacled persons such as strenuous
sports like football or rugby, skydiving, diving, and swimming, all of a sudden become possible.

Self-esteem and self-confidence improve by leaps and bounds, as now one can do a lot of things previously deemed suitable only for persons with good eyesight. The social, personal and professional life of the person with newly-restored vision tends to take a sudden dramatic turn for the better. Things can only look up for the for the person who has had his vision corrected by lasik eye surgery.
